Daily Outfit — Halloween

Happy Halloween! I've always thought that was a bit of a redundant phrase, but oh well.

Dress—A-Wear
Jumper—Dunnes Stores
Hat—H&M
Bat tights & pumpkin balloon—my mother's Halloween care package!
Shoes—Doc Marten
Poe Badge (I thought it was appropriate today)—Etsy

I'm trying to be enthused about Halloween, but the IKEA Christmas catalog turned up in my postbox this morning and, well, my thoughts are now floating around amidst seas of red and gold baubles and endless strings of white lights. Whoops.

Daily Outfit: Red and Gold and Tartan

Dress & Belt—vintage shop in Reykjavik
Cardigan—H&M
Black top—Dunnes Stores
Boots—Clarks

Brooch—my mother

I never take this cardigan off any more, it seems. I wear it with any gold jewellery I own—red and gold is one of the most pleasing colour combinations that I know of, especially when it's cold and dreary outside.

Also, a quick reminder that the Looking Glass Boutique 10% off code expires after tomorrow, so go get your discounts while you can!

Not Quite A Daily Outfit: Art Splurge

I went and splurged on some art materials today. I've had nothing but a sketchbook and pencils for the last few months, and it was getting a bit dull. But now... Ink! Markers! Watercolour paper! Brushes! Heaven.
So in celebration, and in lieu of my own daily outfit, here's a stylish lady I doodled earlier. A "What I Wish I Wore", if you will. Apologies for the photographs, but I don't even have a kettle, let alone a scanner, here!

Inspiration: Julie Haus

Earlier on in the week I Blog Fashion linked to Shabby Chic Boutique, and there I discovered some real delights on Julie Haus's website. Her dresses, in particular, are often just the kind of incredibly girly thing that I'd have loved as much when I was five as I do now.

Daily Outfit: Jane Eyre or Ryanair?

Blouse - Penney's/Primark
Skirt - H&M
Bow - nicked it from another top
Shoes - Doc Marten

Excuse me while I have a moment with the Matte tool that I found in iPhoto the other day, I think it's kind of cute. Also, it helps to hide the horrible mess in the apartment behind me!
I wasn't sure if I felt like a governess or an air hostess in this outfit... opinions?

Update: Wooden Initial Badge Hunt Success!

Last month I was ogling other people's wooden initial brooches, and am now happy to say that my own hunt for one has been successful! Well, sort of. I found a big box of wooden letters in a stationery shop (a really adorable stationery shop, I might add) which were perfect for sticking pins to the back of. The one I bought feels really big! Sort of like woodland bling.

They didn't have an E, unfortunately, so I had to settle for my surname initial instead - everyone calls my by my surname, anyway, so it's not too strange. I'll head back to look for an E next week, though. For 50c a pop, I could have all the letters I want and still not break the bank, I think.

Daily Outfit: Adventures in H&M

(Are You Afraid of the Dark, anyone?)

My H&M addiction is getting serious. It's all so nice in there, and so much cheaper than everywhere else! Especially when there's a big ol' sale on... I'd love to have the chance to shop in some of the smaller stores and boutiques here in Gothenburg, as there's some amazing stuff there, but living on €60 a week I don't really have much of a chance. I was in Dromma (I didn't realise the shop had such a nice blog!) yesterday where I tried on some gorgeous dresses, and I practically drown in my own drool every time I pass the window of Noa Noa, but I have to continue to be strong and keep my resolve in place!

Skirt, top, lace bolero, hairclip - H&M
Coat - Dorothy Perkins
Bag - second-hand
Tights - New Look
Shoes - Doc Marten

Behind the scenes of my blog photography. How exciting.

Bloglovin'

I don't think I'll be switching to this new-fangled Bloglovin' contraption any time soon; I love Google Reader to little pieces. Since lots of you seem to have started using it, though, I set myself up an account, and you can follow my blog at the link below:

Inspiration: Edith & Ella Autumn/Winter 2008

When I was posting about my dog dress on Tuesday, I realised that I'd never been to the Edith & Ella website. They have some beautiful Autumn/Winter styles up now, and I am lusting after each and every one of them!

Right now I'm fantasising about the red jumper in the top row paired with the skirt in the second row and, oh, is it much too early to be imagining Christmas? (The answer is yes. I tend to refuse to allow any mention of it until December 1st. Sweden is testing my resolve, however, with promises of snow and festive cheer aplenty.)

Daily Oufit: The Dog Dress

Dress - Edith & Ella
Jumper - Dunnes
Shoes - Doc Martens
Belt - vintage shop in Iceland

There's a better shot of the dress here . (My camera died distressingly soon after I went out to take pictures this afternoon, so I was left with only a couple of decent pictures.) It's one of my favourite dresses that I own - it's houndstooth-patterned and has dogs on it! It's a dress and a pun, all rolled into one beautiful packgage.

Looking Glass Promotion - 10% Discount for Vulgar Moon Readers!

You might remember me getting all googly-eyed over some beautiful clothes last month. Well, those responsible for them - the lovely ladies from the Looking Glass Boutique - contacted me today with a pretty great deal for you all - get 10% off their Autumn/Winter collection when you enter the code VM117 at the checkout! I Love... Ghost World!

It is no secret that my favourite film in the universe is Ghost World, based on the comic book by Daniel Clowes (which comes just as highly recommended). I spent about a year looking at the cover in DVD shops, thinking it looked amazing, and then completely forgetting to look up reviews when I went home. I eventually found it in a second-hand shop one day, and figured I couldn't really go wrong for €5! And I was certainly right. It stars Thora Birch as Enid and Scarlett Johansson as Rebecca - two girls who ooze cynicism from every pore.

It is also no secret that I want to be Enid. A lot. When I first met my boyfriend, I gave him my copy of Ghost World to watch - I asked him if he liked it, and he told me he didn't think he could say no because it was basically a film about me. (I think he secured my affections for sure that day!) When I go out for a few drinks with one particular friend of mine and sleazy guys try to chat us up, we tell them our names are Enid and Rebecca (or Scarlett and Thora). I make eternal references to giant glasses of milk (you'll get it if you've seen it). In short, I... should probably shut up about Ghost World in my day-to-day life, but that's really not going to happen any time soon.

This is Enid. My hero.

She brings her friends (well, friend) to lame, boring record parties.

Wears giant Doc Martens all the time.

Dyes her hair green.

Hangs out with Steve Buscemi.

And makes him take her to adult shops.

And best of all, she does it without coming across as an annoying hipster freak. What I love most about this film is that it doesn't try too hard. Unlike Art School Confidential, ugh. Enid's mad dress sense is completely justified by her personality - she gets a kick out of weird things, and it's completely possible to imagine her going into a shop and buying everything she wears. (She also inspired the Luella Spring/Summer collection that so many fashion blogs went wild for a few months ago!) Best of all, she does it without seeming like a vain, narcissistic stereotype of a teenage girl, and that something I've been pretty pushed to find that in a film.

I know that lots of you are already Ghost World fans, but those of you who haven't seen it should go and grab a copy ASAP (I love how obnoxious that acronym sounds)! I promise you won't be disappointed, and HMV always seem to have it in their sale for €4.99, so it won't even break the bank.

Do you have a fictional role-model? Is there an Enid-equivalent in your life that I'm missing out on? Do tell!

Daily Outfit: New Autumn Clothes from H&M

H&M Skirt, Shirt & Cardigan - Penney's/Primark Shoes - Topshop Tights

Summer grows old, cold-blooded mother.
The insects are scant, skinny.
In these palustral homes we only
Croak and wither.

Mornings dissipate in somnolence.
The sun brightens tardily
Among the pithless reeds. Flies fail us.
The fen sickens.

Frost drops even the spider. Clearly
The genius of plenitude
Houses himself elsewhwere. Our folk thin
Lamentably.

A Caged Animal

I saw this over on A Spoonful of Sugar and just about died of perfection.

Allison Wells' Interactive Circus Cage Brooch comes with a collection of animals/humans, and you can change them around depending on your mood. If you feel like promoting animal welfare, on the other hand, you can wear the cage empty with an escaped animal brooch beside it!

Never has any piece of jewellery tickled my fancy so much before. Anyone got a spare ¢1500?

Daily Outfit: Exams and Bed

I ventured out today for a Swedish exam (it's been so long since I took a test of any sort!) , which meant actually getting dressed:

Excuse the dorky MacBook photo!

Jumper & skirt - second-hand
Top - H&M
Tights - New Look
Poe Brooch - Etsy

But most of the day was spent like this:

Pyjamas - H&M (They cost about €20! I miss Penney's!)
Cozy Fleece-y Blankie - IKEA

I need to make some plans for the week or I'm going to go insane. I can't even claim that I've been curling up happily with a book, because the one I'm reading for class at the moment (Beloved by Toni Morrison) is boring me half to death. Catch 22 is sitting on my shelf and looking awfully tempting right now...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Fashion!

I've spent the weekend wearing pyjamas (I bought them on Friday, having only had a flimsy slip thing to sleep in for the last month, and I'm in HEAVEN), drinking hot chocolate with Bailey's cream (to reiterate: HEAVEN), and watching tv shows (yup, my Buffy the Vampire Slayer binge is still in full swing).

While bumming around in sleepwear doesn't do much for my sense of aesthetics, my Buffy overdose has provided a wealth of sartorial inspiration! Mostly in the form of Willow, mind you; I'm only on season four, where they've just about escaped the dodgy world of 90's fashion, and the ever-trendy Buffy looks a bit outdated now. Willow, on the other hand, is pretty kooky in terms of style, and her appeal (to me, anyway) hasn't aged a bit!

For the first three seasons, her outfits consist mainly of short skirts, colourful tights, jumpers, and runners. Pants and dungarees make appearances, too. While Google is coughing up all manner of Willlow/Oz picspams (aww), I'm having a hard time finding decent pictures of what she's wearing. I hope the ones above will jog your memories sufficiently, anyway!

Buffy screencaps from here and here.

Daily Outfit: I Stockholm!

Coat - Dorothy Perkins
Skirt/Bag/Shoes - Second-Hand
Beret - H&M

I spent last weekend in Stockholm, and stayed right in the middle of the second-hand shop district! I only ended up buying a pair of granny-esque shoes, though; coffee, cake, and nice wine seem to be much higher on my list of priorities at the moment.
